Finding a therapist in India

Finding the right therapist is tougher than deciding that you need to go to therapy!

The confusion begins from the get-go itself.. where to find a therapist? How to know that the therapist is an authorized professional, and not a quack? Will I be able to connect and share with them?

As a therapist, I connect with a lot of people in my circle who seem to to feel exhausted with this confusion amidst their actual concern.

I am sharing some keynotes that can be your starting point:

  • Where to find a therapist?

Now there are some mental health organizations that have many psychologists listed or associated with them on their website itself. Often on these websites, you shall find different types of therapists too, like individual therapists, couple therapists, child psychologist, etc.

There are also many therapists who work independently. You might also find these therapists by searching on Google, Instagram or Linkedin. Many independent therapists have an Instagram page for their practice.

For instance, Becoming Conscious Beings is available at

    Website: https://www.becomingconsciousbeings.com

    Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therapywithbcb/

Easier than this is to simply open conversations with your friends and peers. You most definitely would find someone in your circle who would be able to recommend a therapist they have worked with before.

  • How to know if they are authorized, skilled professionals?

Even amidst the changing guidelines presently in India, the minimum qualification that remains a basic requirement is the completion of a Master's degree in Psychology. Therapists may take up further qualifications and professional licensures, but a Master's remain the basic requirement for calling oneself a counsellor/therapist.

Do not hesitate to ask them for their qualification and Master's degree. Many often have it mentioned somewhere in their profiles.

  • How to know if they're the right fit for you?

Ask them for testimonials. This often gives you an idea of their approach and what your journey with them would look like.

Ask them to explain to you their approach in therapy. Do not get afraid if you hear a lot of seemingly big, new words. Ask them to explain it in simpler language (P.S we often do not realize that some common words in our everyday language is not a part of everbody's everyday conversations. Please give us some grace here :D )

These are some points with which you can start your search. Take a confident 1st step in seeking your therapist.
